For more than four decades, Spring Creek Mine has played a vital role in the regional economy and energy landscape of northern Wyoming and southern Montana. Located near Decker, Montana, Spring Creek Mine is operated by Navajo Transitional Energy Company (NTEC) and produces high-quality thermal coal that helps meet the nation’s energy needs while maintaining a strong commitment to safety, environmental stewardship, and community partnership.
What We Do
Spring Creek Mine began coal shipments in 1980 and today remains one of the largest surface coal mining operations in the country. The mine produces approximately 9–13 million tons of thermal coal annually using efficient surface mining methods, including draglines, truck and shovel operations. Coal is transported via rail, with a dedicated loop and multiple unit-train loading capabilities supporting safe and reliable delivery to customers across the country.
Over its operating history, Spring Creek Mine has shipped more than 478 million tons of coal, reflecting decades of consistent production, operational reliability, and accountability.
Our People
At the heart of Spring Creek Mine is its workforce of approximately 250 employees. The majority of our team members live in Sheridan Couty Wyoming, and the surrounding communities, making Spring Creek truly a local employer with deep regional roots.
